Abstract: Graphene, a single atomic layer of graphite, has attracted tremendous attention. Its unique physical properties are expected to generate many new applications. However, to meet requirements of different device applications, it is necessary to modify the structure and properties of graphene. Besides experimental studies, computational approach, particularly those based on first-principles calculation, is an effective method to investigate modification to graphene properties by doping, mechanical strain, etc. and potential device applications. In this talk, some of our recent work related to electronic, catalytic and hydrogen storage properties of graphene will be discussed. Results of our first-principles calculations indicate that mechanical strain can enhance metal binding on graphene, leading to much improved catalytic and hydrogen storage properties of graphene. Using graphene nanoribbons, devices such as spin diode, transistor and logic gates can be implemented.

个人简介: Dr Feng has been a faculty member with the Department of Physics, NUS, since 1990. and now is the Head of Physics department. His research interest is in computational condensed matter & materials physics. A range of computational methods/techniques is used to investigate fundamental properties of various types of materials, to design new materials, and to simulate physical processes related to materials and life sciences. Dr. Feng’s present research is mainly focused on ab initio electronic structure calculation of fundamental properties of materials for advanced technologies, and prediction of new materials based on ab initio calculations. Projects of current interest include dilute magnetic semiconductors, high k materials, semiconductor and metal surfaces and interfaces, materials for energy storage, etc. He has authored/co-authored more than 290 scientific papers in international refereed journals and one book.
